*CAUTION* This are alpha installation disc sets of a developing operating system. Use at your own risk and take the proper precautions. Supported Hardware. In theory these CDs should install GNU/Hurd on any i386 machine on which Debian 3.0 can be installed using the CD-ROM or the alternative boot-disks. However, unpacking baseGNU onto the drive is no guarantee that GNU/Hurd will run as there may be other hardware issues. Nomenclature. There are no GNU releases as such and so these discs are a snap-shot of the Debian GNU/Hurd archive with the addition of packages from other sources. The letter "K" refers to the version of the GNU/Linux installer on the discs. The number "9" refers to the debian GNU/Hurd packages found on the CDs, DVD and in baseGNU.tgz. In the case of K8 the archive was frozen as at Tue Dec 28 20:00:02 UTC 2004 at ftp-master.debian.org. As GNU is in a continuous state of flux this can be expected to change frequently. Updates. It is my intention to hand over the production of these discs. The DVDs Producing DVDs for K16 required that GNUs slow access of optical discs be taken into account. This meant that the boot system had to be carefully adjusted and that the more difficult to access part of the discs not be used, hence the 3GB images. It may be that some systems may not be able to access packages deep inside the DVD. If you have this problem would you please let me know. Other notes. Two DVDs are being uploaded. These discs contain all the packages in the archives that were not excluded during the build process. These excluded packages could be broken or have dependency problems and the like. Six CDs are needed for all these packages, but only four are being uploaded. The mini-CD and tarball are also being uploaded. During the installation of packages from the discs a "without verification" message will appear. Two versions of debian-cd were used for the builds and they have differing security systems. The integrity of the packages were checked carefully during the build, so don't panic. As usual comments are welcome. For further information about the CDs see http://www.debian.org.
