The Graphical Installation Screen

After your regional settings have been selected, you'll be presented with the main installation screen.

The graphical installation screen is made up of four main areas:

• An icon ring, with fourteen icons representing different stages of the installation. Each stage represents some aspect of your computer that needs to be configured for SOT Linux, for example your sound card or printer. A hand points to the stage that's currently being worked on. Icons may be enclosed by a red, green or gray border:
  • A red border indicates the stage is currently being worked on. A hand points to this icon.

  • A green border indicates a stage that requires no further information to complete. You may click on these icons to return to the stage and edit or re-select the information.

  • A gray border surrounds icons to show that the information about this stage may not be modified. In general these icons will become red, and then green as you progress through the installation. The exceptions are the "Installation Path" and "Installation Type" screens, which may not be modified once copying of packages to your hard drive has begun.

  As you complete each screen, use the > button to move forward to the next.

• The page window, in the middle of the screen, displays information about the current stage. Here's where you can provide, review or edit information needed by the installer. If you've run the Windows Migration Tool (see Section 1.2), much of this data will already be present.

• Navigation buttons, at the bottom of the screen allow you to move back (<) and forth (>) between the installation stages. Pressing the > button will take you to the next screen in the installation. Pressing the < button will take you back to earlier screens or stages -- an alternative to clicking on the green-bordered icons -- if you need to correct or review information in an earlier step.

• A Progress bar at the bottom of the screen tells you what percentage of packages have been copied to your hard drive. The progress bar will only appear after you have completed the Installation Type screen, see Section 1.9. You may continue completing further installation stages while packages are being copied. Once all stages are completed and the progress bar reads 100%, the installation process can finish.

You'll begin at the first "red" stage, and from there you can move on to the rest of the installation screens, using the > button to complete the screens in a linear fashion. The following sections describe the various stages present in the icon ring.
